The Dalriada Tartan

In 2010, a fabric of great historic significance was discovered in Dunollie House. A tartan was found which dated back to the early 18th Century and pre-dated clan tartans. The colours are typical of West Coast tartans at that time.

This historic fabric has been given the name Dalriada, as this best encapsulates the region and the heritage of this ancient tartan.

From small details in the weaving and construction of the cloth, it has been possible to recreate this versatile tartan. The fabric has now been rewoven by MacNaughton Holdings Ltd based in Perth, Scotland as an exact replica.

A group of talented local artists, jewellers, milliners and skilled crafts people have now gone on to interpret the tartan, producing a wide range of products for all, featuring and inspired by the reconstruction of the cloth.

A range of products are available on Dunollie's website.

The Heritage MacDougall Tartan

The Heritage MacDougall Tartan is a replica of the first tartan adopted by the Chiefs of the Clan MacDougall two hundred years ago. The original tartan was discovered in 2010, hanging as curtain in the Clan Seat of Dunollie House, which lies a mile outside Oban.

Despite being badly faded after two centuries in the light, the cloth was still strong and in excellent condition - and most importantly, the original colours were still to be found deep inside the folds of the curtain pelmet.

From small details in the weaving and construction of the cloth, it has been possible to recreate the history of the tartan. The tartan has now been woven for the time in 200 years by Lochcarron Weavers in the Scottish Borders as an exact replica.

Inspired by the reconstruction of the cloth, a group of talented crafts people have gone on to interpret the tartan, creating a wide range of products for all.
